What A-Level Case Studies Are Really Testing
A strong case study response does not simply repeat what the extract says. It converts evidence into economics. If an article reports rising food prices, for example, the relevant task is not to state that households are paying more. You must consider whether supply has contracted, whether demand has risen, how price elasticity affects consumer expenditure, and whether the burden falls more heavily on lower-income households.
Examiners are looking for three connected abilities: accurate economic knowledge, application to the case, and developed analysis or evaluation. The balance changes by question. A two-mark data question demands precision and no unnecessary theory. But this depends on spare capacity, the responsiveness of supply, and whether the extra demand displaces domestic demand for other products.
Diagrams can strengthen analysis when they are relevant and accurate. Use them to clarify a causal point, not as decoration. Label axes, curves, equilibrium points, and shifts clearly. Then refer directly to the diagram in your explanation. A poorly drawn or unexplained diagram adds little value.
4. Apply evidence with purpose
Application is more than inserting a country name into a generic paragraph. Use the exact evidence to prove that your analysis fits this case. If the extract states that unemployment is concentrated among young workers, discuss occupational immobility, lack of experience, or a mismatch between skills and vacancies. If inflation is driven by imported energy, distinguish it from demand-pull inflation.
Numbers are especially valuable. Instead of saying an export market is significant, state that it accounts for a stated share of sales or that export earnings rose by the reported percentage. Where data permits, calculate changes carefully and show your working. Accuracy signals control, while a careless percentage-point error can undermine an otherwise convincing answer.
However, do not force every statistic into every paragraph. One well-chosen fact, explained properly, is more persuasive than a string of figures with no economic interpretation.
5. Evaluate by identifying what changes the outcome
Evaluation is where distinction-level answers separate themselves. Generic phrases such as “it depends on the government” or “there may be drawbacks” are not evaluation unless you explain exactly what the dependency is and how it affects the likely result.
For policy questions, assess effectiveness through the nature of the problem, the size of the intervention, the time horizon, unintended consequences, and practical constraints. A subsidy for education may improve access and generate positive external benefits, but its impact depends on whether low-income households face non-price barriers, whether providers can expand capacity, and whether the government can finance the measure without reducing spending elsewhere.
For macroeconomic questions, use conditions such as the state of the business cycle, spare productive capacity, exchange-rate movements, confidence, and global demand. For microeconomic questions, focus on elasticities, market structure, information gaps, and the availability of substitutes. These are not add-on phrases. They should determine your final judgment.
A conclusion should answer the question directly. Avoid declaring that a policy “will work” without qualification.
